To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the twinning between Reading and Dusseldorf, the children took part in a special assembly and video project. 70 years ago, some children from Dusseldorf came to Reading as part of an exchange project while the city of Dusseldorf was rebuilt following the Second World War. The children of Thameside made a video to send to Gerhard Tersteegen Primary School, including some songs in German, while the children in Germany made a video for Thameside, including songs in English. In assembly today, there was a live Skype call, including the Mayor of Reading, The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Rose Williams to celebrate this anniversary and meet each school, before the videos were shared and a song sang together. Mrs Wallace even welcomed the children from both schools in excellent German!
Huge thanks to Maria Hackemann, a parent at Thameside and member of the Reading Dusseldorf Association for helping to link the schools and co-ordinate the project, Mrs Jacobs for working so hard teaching the Year 6 choir songs in German, and Aghilas for editing the Thameside video. Also thanks to Herr Thrien (Headmaster) and the staff and children of Gerhard Tersteegen Primary School.
